Competencies are a range of skills, attitudes and behaviours that allow our diverse learners to navigate the complexities of the world around them.
JCSRS uses a framework of six Global Competencies: Communication, Citizenship, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity and Character. These Competencies are embedded in the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) framework.
Enhancing Communication Skills
Effective communication is usually a high priority for our families. We support successful and diverse communication skills that can lead to greater participation in social and academic activities, enhancing overall quality of life.
Fostering Citizenship
We encourage students to appreciate different cultures and perspectives, fostering a sense of independence and responsibility. Being aware and connected to the world around us is vital for building inclusive communities.
Promoting Collaboration
Collaboration skills begin with everyday interactions in school and grow to support cooperation and teamwork. Our learners are given lots of opportunities to work on projects and group activities to develop their interpersonal skills and to celebrate diverse contributions.
Developing Critical Thinking
Critical thinking skills are developed by supporting students to move through stages of complexity in the way they conceptualise the world. Students learn to analyse information, make choices and solve problems. These skills promote independence and confidence in their abilities.
Encouraging Creativity
Students are given opportunities to think creatively and explore new ideas. We support students in developing problem-solving skills and flexibility. Creative thinking allows our students to try new things, ask questions and look for opportunities.
Building Character
Our students learn to persevere through the many challenges they face. We support students in developing regulation and reflection skills. These skills help to support resilience and confidence in the face of adversity.
Teachers track the development of the competencies for each student at JCSRS and this progress is shared in the written progress reports.
