The JCSRS curriculum is designed to foster purposeful learning that promotes independent, joyful learners.
The curriculum is:
built around Global Competencies that put the learner at the centre of everything that we do;
designed to be personalised, progressive and challenging for all the learners in our school;
designed to give students multiple opportunities for purposeful learning through repeated and frequent exposure to similar knowledge and skills to develop long-term memory and generalisation skills that they can take beyond the classroom;
designed to reflect the whole person with strong links to therapeutic interventions;
planned and taught via subjects with the flexibility to embed learning into transdisciplinary and project-based learning;
strengthened by powerful pedagogies;
divided into learning pathways, each with its own distinct learning approach and priorities.
The pathways reflect the age of our students and their learning needs. Students are matched to the pathway that best suits their individual requirements. The learning from each pathway builds up over time and complements the curriculum in the next pathway, creating a seamless and cohesive learning experience for all students.
Foundation Pathway
(Early Years)
The Foundation Pathway focuses on building early social, communication and academic skills with an emphasis on learning behaviours and school routines. Our youngest learners develop self-esteem and confidence, alongside practical skills and the ability to apply knowledge effectively using the pedagogy of play.
Builders Pathway
(Primary)
The Builders Pathway focuses on the ongoing development of social, communication, and academic skills in each learner, preparing students for the next step in their learning journey. Learners are given increasing opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills, enabling them to become confident and independent learners.
Explorers Pathway
(All-through)
The Explorers Pathway focuses on experiential and multisensory learning. This pathway has a strong emphasis on fostering well-being whilst developing functional communication and life skills. Learners are given highly personalised opportunities to achieve their full potential.
Life Skills Pathway
(Secondary)
The Life Skills pathway focuses on strengthening functional living skills and extending learning beyond the classroom. There is a focus on developing an awareness of oneself and others, as well as meaningful connections to the wider community. Learners develop essential living skills through the practical application of their learning.
Vocational Pathway
(Post-16)
The Vocational Pathway focuses on preparing students for a successful transition to adulthood. The learning focuses on connecting with the world of work, being a part of the community and fostering independent living skills alongside ongoing core knowledge and skills. Learning fosters individual aspirations and talents, boosting self-motivation and preparing students for life after school.
