Transitions

To ensure effective transition and induction both in and out of school, JCSRS has an extensive transition programme. Transition programmes are in place for every phase, not just for starting or the end of the school, and take place throughout the year. We want every student to have a successful journey through school, from their first visit to their final day and far beyond. We plan and collaborate with all ESF kindergartens and schools.

Coming to JCSRS…

We invite parents and students to visit JCSRS before making a decision to accept the school place.

We invite parents to the initial meeting with the senior leadership team and our Primary Leader. During this time, parents and children will get to tour the school and, if they have not done it already, meet members of the class team. Most importantly, this is an opportunity for us to get to know your child and your aspirations for their future.

In June, students attend transition day, and parents are invited to attend a New Families Information session. You can find presentations from the last recent session here. All students will be given a social story before the holidays to prepare them for the transition.

In addition to the above, the transition includes visiting the current setting of your child, observing them and attending a transition meeting / their Annual Review meeting.

In August, there will be a phased transition into school for the first week of school. Students and parents will be invited to spend a morning or afternoon in class in two small groups, to help the students to adjust to their surroundings. The settling-in period is then reviewed between the staff in the class, the parents and the child and adapted accordingly.

Preparing for Transition After JCSRS

During students' secondary school years, our team works with families to explore aspirations and options for students following graduation from JCSRS. This includes families being invited to work with our team including our school-appointed social worker, hosting information events with local providers sharing information, and planning personalised transitions and visits.

Each graduating student leaves with a comprehensive assessment of their learning profile evidenced in school reports, IEPs and therapy exit reports.
