At the heart of our curriculum sit six Global Competencies. These are the skills, values and behaviours that will support our students to be the best they can be. The competencies are: Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Citizenship, Character and Creativity. Six Global competencies define what it means to be a deep learner. Deep Learning experiences are engaging, relevant, authentic and build the 6 C’s.  Self Photos / Files - Competencies_2 Self Photos / Files - Competencies_1

The JCSRS curriculum is divided into six pathways, each with its own distinct learning approach and priorities. The pathways are determined by age and also by the needs of learners. Students are matched to the pathway that best suits their individual needs.

  • Foundation Pathway - Builds foundation social, communication and academic skills with an emphasis on learning behaviours and school routines. Our youngest learners develop self esteem and confidence alongside practical skills and the ability to use and apply knowledge.
  • Builders Pathway - Builds on developing social, communication and academic skills and preparing students for the next step in their learning journey. Learners are given increasing opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills to become confident and independent learners.
  • Integrated Pathway - Focuses on experiential learning with an emphasis on fostering well-being whilst developing functional communication and life skills. Learners are given highly personalised opportunities to achieve their full potential.
  • Life Skills Pathway - Strengthens functional living skills with an emphasis on developing an awareness of self and others. Learners develop essential living skills that prepare them for the next stage of their learning journey.
  • Living and Learning Pathway - Students extend and apply their knowledge and skills while developing self-motivation and independence. Learners develop greater awareness of themselves and others and work towards meaningful connections to the community.
  • Post 16 Pathway - Develops vocational and independent living skills. Learners are integrated into the world of work to support their transition into adulthood and life beyond school.

At Jockey Club Sarah Roe School (JCSRS), our subject teaching is designed to provide a holistic and personalised educational experience that meets the diverse needs of our students. We offer a range of subjects, including Literacy, Numeracy, Independence, Citizenship, Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE), Creative Arts, Physical Education (PE), The World Around Me, Play, Recreation and Leisure (PRL), Vocational Education, and Digital Literacy.

Our curriculum emphasises the integration of therapeutic practices within these subjects, ensuring that learning is both meaningful and supportive. Through innovative pedagogical approaches and clear long-term planning, we create opportunities for students to practise and apply their skills across various contexts, ultimately empowering them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our school trips, vocational learning opportunities, and life after JCSRS connections are all designed to provide our students with enriching experiences and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom environment. Vocational Learning forms part of the JCSRS secondary curriculum offered through a range of classroom-based learning combined with hands-on experiences at school and off-site. In the delivery of Vocational Learning, we connect with industry partners to deliver authentic work experiences and career support.  Vocational Learning for students is implemented with the support of our qualified team of therapists, teachers and ESF job coaches.

ESF is committed to developing authentic and meaningful learning experiences to enable all students to be the best that they can be. In some cases, this may require students to access learning opportunities across multiple ESF school settings. Students who may benefit from ESF ACCESS include:

  • identified JCSRS students who would benefit from increased social experiences and broader curriculum opportunities in other ESF schools
  • students from other ESF schools who may require access to JCSRS specialist provision to support their learning goals

The aim of our therapeutic input is to support learning in class. Our therapy team consists of two speech therapists, two occupational therapists, and a physiotherapist. Additionally, our students can access Music Therapy and Art Therapy at school. The therapy team collaborates with teachers and support staff to empower students at JCSRS to reach their full potential. They offer direct and indirect services in various areas such as communication, motor skills, social interaction, self-care, sensory processing, and behaviour. Strategies are shared with the class team and families to ensure consistency. The team also contributes to individual education plans, working alongside teachers and families to set appropriate goals for students’ academic and personal growth. Students at JCSRS access therapy using a tiered approach to input.

At ESF Jockey Club Sarah Roe School, we believe in the power of personalisation for every student providing them with the provision they need to succeed. It is the right of every learner at JCSRS to receive an education that builds on strengths, is specific to individual needs, ensures progression and supports the achievement of students’ aspirations.

Our authentic assessment practices enhance learning experiences by celebrating success and guiding future planning. We believe that optimal learning outcomes are achieved when our teachers, therapists, and educational assistants deeply understand each student. We follow a comprehensive assessment cycle, continuously monitoring progress through JCSRS Levels and a whole school Feedback Tool, with regular updates on Seesaw. Our assessment strategies include setting goals via Annual Reviews and Individual Education Plans (IEPs), providing ongoing written and verbal feedback to support student achievement and engagement, tracking progress across six Global Competencies, and conducting formative and summative assessments. We also recognize student achievements through accredited courses.

Physical Education is an integral part of student learning and growth. Our PE curriculum is designed to develop core movement and balance skills and progress to individual and team sports. Students learn key skills, attitudes and behaviours to engage in a range of activities. At JCSRS students have two designated lessons of Physical Education a week, using the gymnasium, hall, playground or swimming pool. The overall goal of our PE programme is to foster lifelong health and well-being in our students in a way that is meaningful to their lives in Hong Kong.

Our Creative Arts programme includes both visual and expressive arts lessons each week. The curriculum develops skills and knowledge by engaging students with many types of artistic media in order to ignite a passion for creativity. Student talent is celebrated through a number of whole school events.
